About Lee's Summit, MO
Tucked in the middle of county Jackson and Cass is the thriving city of Lee's Summit. It’s considered a favorite spot for tourists to visit, the best place if you want easy access to Missouri’s neighboring state, Kansas. But regardless of Lee's Summit’s convenient geographic location, it is still a great place to visit for leisure and some family-bonding time. In fact, it’s not odd for any locals to spot a bundle of tourists together enjoying the view. It’s simply the type of place that people go to relax their mind, the perfect place to unwind- especially with the cool air and the sweet, welcoming, locals. Lee's Summit has a lot to offer, from sports, food, shops, and even mini carnivals. People are thoroughly entertained due to the number of things to do and explore, with wide trees stretching their ways up to the horizon, it’s also a great place to seep in nature’s beautiful scenery as well.
Though before Lee's Summit was known for what it is today, the town was named ‘Town of Strother’ after their founder’s wife, Maria D. Strother. Cute romance aside, the couple came to be in town after getting married in 1844. They had a couple of children at the time, and so William B. Howard got a plot of land in Lee's Summit and they built their home close to the would-be town. Sadly, the couple were kept apart as Howard was imprisoned and did parole, it wasn’t until the American Civil War ended did he return to Lee's Summit. Its memorable beginnings are taught to the town’s children, commemorating their memory by sharing what happened to generations to come.
There are two stories on how Lee's Summit’s name came to be. First, the name ‘Strother’ was changed into “Lee's Summit” when Dr. Pleasant John Graves Lea was murdered by the Kansas Jayhawkers, a group of guerilla gangs, in 1862. Locals decided to immortalize his name by commemorating Lee's Summit in his honor. The second story claims that the city was named after Rober E. Lee, a Civil War General who died in 1866. Though people are unsure of how Lee's Summit took its name, they love the mystery surrounding the roots of their home. You know what they say, there is nothing like a good mystery to bring a small town together.
This little claim is true even back then, with the story of Lee's Summit’s very own Cole Younger, a citizen from the 1900s that is still remembered today. Younger was coined as ‘The Last of the Great Outlaws’ by Homer Croy, a famous book author. His story goes from soldiers in war, the drowning grief of losing loved ones, and going against union forces trying to burn Lee's Summit. It’s a remarkable story that the residents of Lee's Summit still tell today, how Younger and his brothers saved houses around the city, along with their founder, William B. Howard. Though, it’s a cautionary tale, as years later Cole Younger also ended up in prison after attempting a bank heist in Northfield, Minnesota. It should come as no surprise that the people in town are an adventurous bunch, as evidenced by their late ancestors.
Cole Younger might not be considered the best role model, but the tales of his life are too fun to forget. With tales of being an outlaw, a gang leader, and being a monster to look after during raids, Cole Younger’s life was filled with adrenaline and a need to quench his thirst over everything that went wrong in his life. Whether he was successful or not with this is up to debate and for historians to decide.
Nowadays, the people of Lee's Summit live normal lives. It’s safe to say that there are no more tales of outlaws or gang leaders. With countless schools littered around town, and special events being held up by the town council, it’s relatively tamer, especially when compared to their history. If there’s one thing for sure, it’s that Lee's Summit is a much safer place to live in, with the city topping at 27th in “100 Best Cities to Live in the United States”.
