About Columbia, MO
Dubbed as ‘The Athens of Missouri’, Columbia is located at the heart of Missouri, east of Kansas City and west of St.Louis. Columbia, MO was founded in 1821, and only recently did it become the fastest growing city in Missouri. In Columbia, you can easily visit the preservation sites of places such as Mark Twain National Forest, Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge, and Rock Bridge Memorial State Park.
The city of Columbia rich origin began when the early pioneers from the 1800s in both Kentucky and Virginia began to settle in Boonslick. However, the first house in Columbia was built a little later in 1820 by Thomas Duly. This humble house was only the beginning, as of now, Columbia is known for their beautiful architecture in their downtown area, with splashes of the city’s personality sprayed into the buildings of their Universities. Plenty of the architecture seen in Columbia is heavily inspired by the neo-gothic phase- you can see this in the Jesse Hall of the University of Missouri, and by the Memorial Union. The artfully crafted scenery seen in Columbia is documented through the four historic districts located in the city. So worry not of the faith of this town.
Moreover, Columbia is the home of one of the largest fine arts venues in the state, the Missouri Theatre Center for the Arts and Jesse Auditorium. Film Festivals are regularly being held in these two art venues. But it doesn’t stop there, just recently, Columbia was also the muse of the film ‘Box Elder’, where the movie was filmed and based on; along with horror movie ‘You’re Next’. This isn’t to say that the arts isn’t all Columbia shines in. Members of this community also participate in a number of sports. In fact, they have the means to host national football, baseball, and basketball games. Just recently, the Taylor Stadium hosted the NCAA Baseball Championship in 2007. Columbia also holds the record for having the largest state games in the United States of America, which isn’t too shabby for a city that claims to be all about arts and culture. The city hosts a number of non-profit programs in honor of physical fitness and health, making the citizens of Columbia well-rounded individuals. Especially with their keen eye over delicious cuisines, having plenty of bars and restaurants established as early as the late 1800s. Quite a feat, and such acts as proof of the city’s love over their own culture and people.
