The city of Roeland Park, KS is the story of how explorers and visionaries passed through a small land until it became the strong community we know today.
The man this community was named after was an example of a human who fought for his beliefs. A visionary from a distant place who traveled and realized his vision to give life to the Roeland Park, KS we know today.
Roeland Park, KS receives its name in honor of an immigrant who was more than just a man who left everything behind. John Roe, an Irish man, moved to the United States in the 19th century.
Although far away from home, Roe never lost the values that have stayed in the community of Roeland Park, KS until today. Once he arrived in a new country, he got to work.
After working as a bookkeeper and farmer in Missouri, he gathered all his savings and started purchasing bits of land around the area of what we know today as Roeland Park, KS. John Roe acquired land across Missouri, Iowa, and Oklahoma and started investing in farming and cattle to grow his business endeavors.
After buying 267 acres of land, in 1884 Roe began to work on his personal dream, without knowing it would become Roeland Park, KS, a place home for thousands of people. The former Shawnee Indian Mission was now his family’s home after he completed a purchase of 1600 acres of land.
The respect for history that is common in Roeland Park, KS was a trait inherited from Roe. The school, mission and traits of the land he purchased will eventually be restored by his descendants.
Once the entire nuclear and extended family of John Roe had moved into Johnson County, they became people of importance in the region. Roe had a vision for Roeland Park, KS, without ever dreaming it’d be his legacy.

The large and beautiful structure had been home to one the founding family of Roeland Park, KS for over half a century. After the war, the owners had no choice but to sell it to give way to a route’s interchange.
Despite developments pushed by massive modernization, the descendants of John Roe showed a community spirit through all their deeds. The adventurer’s daughters were pushed to sell their old house to modern developers, they donated land to build a school, a parish and a park for the town.
