Versailles, MO is a small town founded in the first third of the 19th century. This is followed by a list of famous people who, in one way or another, have had a connection to the small town of Versailles, Missouri.
James Lawrence "Bud" Walton is the founder of Walmart. As a child, he worked on the family farm and worked as a lifeguard, and delivered newspapers to help his family. He was elected senior class president and played varsity basketball.
After graduation, he attended Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Missouri. He served as a Navy pilot during World War II. While undergoing flight training, Bud met and married his wife Audrey.
Bud and his brother Sam started their career in retail, working in the Ben Franklin shop, the franchise division of Butler Brothers out of Chicago. His first shop opened in Versailles, Missouri. Bud and Sam co-founded Walmart in Arkansas in 1962.
The brothers were involved in philanthropy. Their biggest donations went to build a new home for the Columbia Chamber of Commerce and the Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau in Columbia, Missouri, and to build a basketball arena at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.
Walton died at the age of 73. He is buried at Memorial Park Cemetery in Columbia, Missouri. Bill Laurie is a philanthropist and businessman, formerly a successful American basketball player and coach. Bill, at one time, owned the St Louis Blues club and was co-chairman of Paige Sports Entertainment.
Laurie was born in Versailles, Missouri. While in college, Laurie played basketball for the Memphis Tigers and competed in the 1973 national championship games. While in college, Laurie began dating his childhood girlfriend Nancy Walton and they married after graduation.
His career began as a teacher, then he became a basketball coach. Laurie directed Rock Bridge High School and Christian Brothers College High School. He and his wife live at Crown Center Farms in Columbia, Missouri, where they raise racehorses. For 12 years from 1999 to 2011, Bill owned the St Louis Blues club. He was also the owner of the Savvis Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Along with his wife, he is co-founder and co-chairman of Paige Sports Entertainment. He is a member of the Missouri Athletic Association and is inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.
Of particular note are Laurie's charitable activities. He donated large sums of money to build a new sports arena for the Missouri Tigers, helped the University of Missouri Equine Center, the University of Memphis athletics department, and other organizations.
Joseph Franklin Rutherford, also known as Judge Rutherford. Rutherford became interested in law as a young boy. His father disapproved of this interest, he allowed him to go to college, but in return, he offered a deal. Under the terms of this deal, Rutherford was to hire an employee to work on the family farm in his stead. To fulfill the terms of the deal, Rutherford borrowed funds. A court stenographer and an encyclopedia salesman helped him pay for his law studies.
He was the second president of the combined Watchtower Bible and Pennsylvania Tract Society. Was a founding member of the Jehovah's Witnesses, which emerged from the Bible Researchers movement founded by Charles Taze Russell.
Mary Malcolm Fetzer and Rutherford were married on 31 December 1891. In 1942 their only child Malcolm Cleveland was born. Rutherford and Mary divorced after Rutherford became president of the Watchtower Society in 1919.
In Versailles, MO the American author June Ray Wood was born. In 1995 her book The Man Who Loved Clowns won the William Allen White Prize, the same year she also won the Mark Twain Prize. Her brother Richard, who had Down's Syndrome, was her inspiration for creating The Man Who Loved Clowns. June's other siblings had to protect Richard from other people who would relate to him. Many people laughed and stared, but Richard thought it was a compliment.
