Peculiar, MO, a city that is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan area, and Cass County, which is popular for its motto “Where the odds are with you.” According to history, there are two versions of how Peculiar, MO, got its name. First, they said it was Edgar Thompson, a known community’s first postmaster, who suggested changing the town name to “Excelsior.” Because Excelsior already existed in Atchison County, MO, it turned down the suggestion. They offered many names, but none of them worked. Afterward, Thompson wrote a complaint to the Postmaster-General, “We don’t care what name you give us as long as it is sort of ‘peculiar.” Thompson finally suggested the name “Peculiar,” Later, on June 22, 1868, the post office was developed and named Peculiar.
The other version for the Peculiar, MO, according to Missouri folklorist Margot Ford McMillen. A group of settlers was looking for a place to farm, and when they finally cleared the small site, one was amazed and voiced out, “Well, that’s peculiar! It’s the very place I saw in a vision back in Connecticut.” The area was later purchased, and Peculiar, MO, became established as a village. Peculiar, MO, was founded as a town in the 1890s and was designated as a Missouri fourth-class city in 1953. In July 1968, Peculiar, MO, celebrated its centennial.
