Lee's Summit is one of the cities that can be found within the counties of Jackson and Cass, in Missouri.
The history of Lee's Summit began over a century ago with Strother, a small 11 block town that links the Missouri Pacific Railroad tracks. What used to be a small 11 block town now comprises 65.87 square miles which in the present day is known as the City of Lee's Summit.
It all started in the late 1800s when a man named William B. Howard got drawn to the fertile, gently rolling prairie land and decide to build a Lee's Summit on it. The dream of William B. Howard has enticed over 100,000 residents to what is described as a progressive, yet restful and family-oriented community, intending to create a dynamic, vibrant Lee's Summit, MO. When you go down memory lane, you can't but notice how the story of the once small town of mere 11 blocks is filled with the quiet determination, dedication, and courage of its citizens. The city of Lee's Summit, MO, formerly known as the Town of Strother was founded on October 28, 1865. It was incorporated in November 1868 and the name change from the Town of Strother to Lee's Summit.
The use of "Summit" is centered on the fact the city's elevation is the peak point on the railroad between Kansas City and St. Louis. However, there are numerous opinions and theories on what led to the adoption of "Lee". The most populous theory seems to be that Lee's Summit, MO, was named after Robert E. Lee, a Civil War General. The second most popular theory proposes that the town was named after Dr. Pleasant Lea, a prominent early settler.
When you look at the geographical statistics provided by the United States Census Bureau, Lee's Summit occupies 65.39 square miles of which only 2.04 square miles is water, the rest is land.
As of the 2010 census conducted by the United States Census Bureau, the total population of Lee's Summit is 91,364 with a population density of 1,442.2 inhabitants per square mile. This makes it the sixth-largest city both in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area and the Kansas state.
The racial makeup of Lee's Summit is evenly distributed. The largest race in the city is the Whites who account for 86.1% of the total population. They are closely followed by the African Americans who account for 8.4%. Others are Hispanics or Latinos of any race who account for 3.9%, Native Americans who account for 0.3%, Pacific Islanders who account for 0.1%, Asians who are 1.7%, people of other races are 1.1%, and people from two or more races 2.4%
The climate of Lee's Summit is a four-season humid continental climate. During winter, they experience mild days and cold nights. During summer, they experience hot days and muggy nights.
The government style of Lee's Summit is the charter style which is represented by a City Council and a Mayor. The four districts under it are each represented by two council members whose terms only last four years and cannot serve more than two terms consecutively.
