About Olathe, KS
Considered as one of the biggest cities in the state of Kansas, Olathe, KS is a continuously growing population of 125,000 people. Though before it became such a staple to the state, Olathe, KS was but a lowly acre of land given a chance to prove itself. In the spring of 1867, Dr. John T. Barton took his horse and rode out to Johnson County. He was perplexed with the beauty etched of the petals of each wildflower that he saw within Olathe, KS. He described the ride to his friends about how he would name the future town as ‘Beautiful’, and as romantic as that sounds, Olathe, KS was named from a Shawnee interpreter’s native language.
With such a delightful beginning, one might assume that the town was set on a prosperous path then and there. However, this wasn’t the case with Olathe, KS. As the town became a city in 1857, tension began to rose over multiple and neighboring cities around Missouri and Kansas. Abolitionist’s settlers were angry and agitated over the slavery seen in the neighboring state, and a conflict quickly arose between the two, which consequentially led to what is known now as “Bleeding Kansas”. Issues didn’t subside in Olathe, KS even after the intervention of military forces and Union officials. By 1862, a raid by guerilla Confederates was led by William Quantrill against the city, causing piles of dozens of bodies littered across the destroyed city. Quantrill demanded to put the community of Olathe, KS into a binding oath into Confederacy. Despite the oath being deemed as invalid due to the enemy not being actual militia units, Olathe, KS was placed into the hands of Kansas militia throughout the Civil War. Raids persisted against Olathe, KS, with over 10,000 men fighting till retreat. It was only until 1865 did the Confederate surrender, and the posts surrounding Olathe, KS was subsequently disbanded.
After the destructive horrors in Olathe, KS’s pasts, the city is now the 24th fastest growing city in 2008, as by research done by the U.S Census Bureau. It was even deemed as the 11th Best Cities to Live in the United States by CNN, which is such a far cry when compared to what happened during the American Civil War. Olathe, KS underwent a number of city-wide developments, including demolishing previously beloved pieces of architecture around the city, to the pain of loving historians.
