About Holts Summit, MO
In the heart of Callaway County, there is a small city known as Holts Summit, in the State of Missouri. The city lies 7 miles to the northeast of Missouri State’s capital, Jefferson City. That makes Holts Summit, part ofthe Jefferson City Metropolitan Area. The city sits on U.S. Routes 54.
Holts Summit, has a total area of 3.81 square miles. The area consists of 3.71 square miles of landmass and 0.10 square miles of water. The 2010 Census denoted this city as having a population of 3,247 inhabitants. It consisted of 896 families with 1,377 households.
By 2019 estimates, Holts Summit population had risen to 4,391 residents. The small and tight-knit community traces its origins back to the cold winter of 1819 – 1820. That was the period the first settlements got established.
Pioneer settlers of Holts Summit, were folks from the Virginias. One of those pioneers was Abner Holt and his family, Elizabeth, his wife, and their children. Initially, Abner Holt and his family had settled in Tennessee for a brief time before making their way into Missouri.
Abner Holt had every intention to settle in Callaway County, but that proved somehow tricky from the onset. Rough wilderness coupled with the unavailability of organized settlements in the area hampered immediate settlement. As a result of the harsh conditions, they had to make a stop in Howard County first.
In the winter of 1819-20, the family stayed in Howard County. Still, at the same time, the menfolk ventured into Callaway County and immersed themselves into putting up a homestead and preparing and tilling the land to grow a crop. It was during the following spring when Abner moved his family from Howard County into their new home. That would be the beginning of the community known today as Holts Summit.
Holts Summit thus derived its name from the family name of its earliest settlers, the Holts. Although Abner Holt brought his family to the area, his third-born son, James Holt, would prove to be a significant influence towards the establishment of Holts Summit, as it is today. James, who labored in his father's mill, was also able to acquire pioneer education. Gifted with his excellent business acumen, he helped set the cultural foundation of this community.
James Holt, who was also fondly referred to as Uncle Jimmy by the community, became one of the outstanding citizens of Callaway County. In 1870, one of Holt’s sons, Timothy, plotted out Holts Summit. Timothy co-owned a general store together with his fatherand another cousin. This store was known as Holts Summit. The inspiration behind its naming was its being on the highest point they could find between that area and the great Missouri River. It was around this family store that this town started to grow.
Othernames worthy of mention because of their immense contribution towards the development of the Holts Summit community are; Elijah and John, who were also James Holt's brothers, and Perry Simeon Holt, who was Timothy's son.
The earliest years saw several small businesses cater to the needs of the small community. You could find items like tobacco, nails, jewelry, and shotguns in Lon Holt's store. In the present day, at what is Greenway Park, stood Joe Green’s place fromwhere he supplied the community with maple syrup sourced from his maple grove. There was also a grist mill as well as a sawmill run by Lewis Atkinson and Joe Pearre.
Education was in a one-room building which was the first school in the community. With the expansion and growth of the community, it was inevitable that the community had to get annexed to the School District of Jefferson City. Currently, there are two different schools, namely Callaway Hills School and North School.
Holts Summit, is a predominantly Christian community. It is host to several churches. Churches found in the city include; the Community Presbyterian Church, Summit First Assembly of God, St. Andrews Catholic, Union Hill Baptist, and General Baptist church.

Among this city’s other attractions are the Summit Lake Winery and the Hibernia Station Park. Holts Summit’s most famous son, is Justin Smith, who was an NFL star.
